Gold and Dark

Gold and Dark

Sometimes there are weather conditions that we travel photographers must grab the chance to photograph. It doesn't happen often when you must move continuously, instead of staying in place for a long time, to find the right photographic conditions as landscape photographers do. This was one of those situations, and the picture was already composed there, in front of me, in two colors that I particularly like pulled together: gold and blue.
I was in Plettemberg Bay, a small town in South Africa located along the beautiful Garden Route, which boasts a renowned bay named "Bahia Formosa" by early Portuguese explorers. It also has the advantage of being close to the best attractions of the Western Cape, such as Tsitsikamma National Park, the highest bridge for bungee jumping in the world (the Bloukrans Bridge, 216m), Monkeyland, the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre and ten reserves and natural parks of great beauty. There was a low tide and the immense and deserted yellow beach was well-lighted by the sun, while in the background a big thunderstorm was moving away with its black clouds heavy with rain. A sharp contrast, is privileged when the sun is high in the sky. This photo is absolutely one of my favorites. What do you think?

The surfer awaits

The surfer awaits

California... Who would not like to an image like this, thinking about this wonderful State? Endless beaches, flaming sunsets, surfers riding the ocean waves, and... wharves. Yes, those long wharves that are not so nice to see, but that have already become an icon (and perhaps "Baywatch" contributed to this).
I took this picture in Ocean Beach, a small neighborhood of San Diego, similar to the more famous Venice Beach, that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. It's a really beautiful place, the exact opposite of the "fashionable" district. Here is full of happy people, hippies, artists, dreamers, rappers, youngsters who come here to look at the sunset in silence, while eating a delicious fish taco and drinking a cold beer. But especially it's full of surfers, the real ones, the ones who live on the waves and for the waves. The ones who are never separated from their surfboard.
The surfer in the picture caught my eye. He had just emerged from the water after some rides, and before leaving, he remained there to watch the sun going down behind the horizon for some minutes. Who knows how many sunsets he had already seen, but he didn't want to miss that daily show, he admired it with devotion and respect. It was great to be a part of his small world for a few moments...

Playing on the beach

Playing on the beach

When you take photos, you can freeze in time a frame of the flowing life, and sometimes that frame tells more than what you saw with your eyes. Sometimes it gives different sensations and gives new emotions at our memories, new colors, new sounds... because our mind travels much more than our body, and if your mind is bound to that frame's memories, you can spring also new stories. I think that is the case of today's picture.
I have wonderful memories of the trip in Portugal, an amazing land, with relaxed atmosphere, which teaches to take life easy and to relish of every moment more than one event. I took this picture at Carvoeiro, a small village by the Mediterranean Sea, in the Algarve region. It was April, and it wasn't populated by a crowd of tourist like in summer. Even if the village is very pretty, I'm not attached in particular at the memories of this place, however I think that here is kept the own spirit of Portugal: the white houses with the colorful roofs, the swing sound of the sea, the shrill call of the seagulls, the worn out fisherman's boat, the fragrance of sea salt, the golden sunset, the yellow cliffs typical of Algarve, and some cheerful little boys that play football on the beach. It was all there, in front of me, but it's been this picture that let me really see it.
