New York View

New York View

This time I want to tell you about a picture that doesn't represent something in particular for me, but that has had a large following on the web. I don't know why, but that's my most viewed picture on Flickr and it was also chosen for an exhibition about New York in New York.
I took this picture in 2012 with my old Nikon D3000, from the top of the magnificent Empire State Building. It was a winter morning and the light was perfect. I took this panorama and then I changed it into black and white. Because New York is black and white in my head. It will be for that '30s atmosphere , for the smoking manholes that create monochrome effects, for the long shadows of majestic skyscrapers that cover the streets with light and dark shapes, or it will simply be because New York illuminates really itself when evening falls.
It's curious... Sometimes a picture is taken from a place where millions of people take the same picture and you do it just for yourself, to take away a memory, you like most of the other millions. Yet, somehow, that picture is noticed and appreciated, by more than just yourself. It's the magic of photography... or perhaps the magic of the Big Apple.

New York a New York.

The Breath of the Valley

Monument Valley

The first picture that I want to tell you about is from 2010, a photo that I took during my second trip to the US, when I used a Nikon D3000, my first SLR.
The picture itself isn't perfect but this place has an important part in my heart, it is one of those places where I'd go back every year to breathe silence, beauty and spirituality. Usually I never return to the same place (in the World there are so many wonders to see!), but this is one of those rare cases where I wanted to return. The first time was in 2008 (and I took the pictures just with a compact and a glorious Nokia... =)).
Of course this masterpiece of nature needs no introduction, it was a protagonist in countless movies, especially westerns. This is the mythic Monument Valley and it's located in Arizona, near the border with Utah. It's a place that should be experienced, not just looked at. Sit on one of those ferrous rocks and listen the sound of the wind through the valley. Breathe deeply. And remember that this isn't a tourist attraction but a sacred place for the Navajo people that inhabit these lands since centuries. For this reason, I suggest you to ask to one Navajo what this place means to them, perhaps while you're participating in a horseback tour. I guarantee you that their story will surprise you. Do not come here as tourists, come here as travelers looking for experiences and come here alone, or with a few dear people with you; stop at least one night to watch the stars, observe this wonder from dawn to dusk to get all the colors and don't just see it from above, but explore it with a Navajo company. And you will return here like I've done...

Now tell me your experience in the Monument Valley or tell me what this picture rises in yourself...
