Three Rondavels

When talking about canyons, the wonderful Grand Canyon in Arizona immediately comes to mind, the largest and the most famous in the world . In fact, not many people know about the place in the picture which I'll tell you today... 

This is Blyde River Canyon, the third largest canyon in the world (the second is Fish River Canyon in Namibia) and certainly one of the most beautiful. Yes because, like most of canyons, it doesn't reveal itself until you have reached its edge, and only then it surprises you and leaves you literally breathless. With its rounded features like gentle watercolor brush strokes, it may seem almost unreal at first sight, but I assure you that you'll want to never deprive yourself of this panorama. 

Blyde is located in the region of Mpumalanga, South Africa, and it's normally a passing place on the way to the more famous Kruger National Park. The picture is actually just the northern section of the great canyon, called Three Rondavels for its rock formations that is reminiscent of the huts of local people (in the Afrikaans language rondavel means "hut"). Another majestic view, God's Window, you can find about fifty kilometers to the south. The Three Rondavels View is beautiful at any time of the day, but if you come at sunset you can catch the incredible shades of ocher, green and blue, and take unforgettable photos. Remember to bring a wide angle lens to capture the entire landscape. In this picture, that I took at the end of the southern winter, I combined two shots with a 14mm in order to have a this panoramic view. But I suggest you don't waste too much time behind the lens, because this immense landscape must be admired above all with your own eyes and imprinted in your mind...

Quando si parla di canyon salta subito alla mente il meraviglioso Grand Canyon in Arizona, il più grande del mondo nonché il più famoso. Non molti infatti conoscono il luogo della foto di cui vi parlo oggi... 

Si tratta del Blyde River Canyon, il terzo canyon più grande del mondo (il secondo è il Fish River Canyon, in Namibia) e sicuramente uno dei più belli. Sì perché, come la maggior parte dei canyon, non si mostra alla vista sino a quando non si è raggiunto il suo bordo, e solo allora ti sorprende e ti lascia letteralmente senza fiato. Con i suoi lineamenti tondeggianti come dolci pennellate di un acquerello, può sembrare quasi irreale ad un primo sguardo, ma vi assicuro che di quella vista non vorreste più privarvene. 

Il Blyde si trova nella regione del Mpumalanga, in Sudafrica, e normalmente è una meta di passaggio sulla via del più celebre Kruger National Park. Quella nella foto è in realtà solo la sezione nord del grande canyon, chiamata Three Rondavels proprio per via delle sue formazioni rocciose che ricordano le capanne dei popoli locali (in afrikaans rondavel significa "capanna"). Un'altra vista maestosa, God's Window, la potrete trovare una cinquantina di km più a sud. Il Three Rondavels View è magnifico a qualsiasi ora del giorno, me se ci venite al tramonto ne potrete cogliere le incredibili sfumature di ocra, verde e azzurro, e scattare foto indimenticabili. Ricordate di portarvi un grandangolo per immortalare l'intero panorama. In questa foto, che ho scattato sul finire dell'inverno australe, ho unito due scatti con un 14mm per poter avere una visuale così ampia. Vi suggerisco però di non perdere troppo tempo dietro l'obiettivo, perché questo immenso paesaggio va ammirato prima di tutto con i vostri occhi e impresso nella vostra mente...   

The Breath of the Valley

The first picture that I want to tell you about is from 2010, a photo that I took during my second trip to the US, when I used a Nikon D3000, my first SLR.

The picture itself isn't perfect but this place has an important part in my heart, it is one of those places where I'd go back every year to breathe silence, beauty and spirituality. Usually I never return to the same place (in the World there are so many wonders to see!), but this is one of those rare cases where I wanted to return. The first time was in 2008 (and I took the pictures just with a compact and a glorious Nokia... =)).

Of course this masterpiece of nature needs no introduction, it was a protagonist in countless movies, especially westerns. This is the mythic Monument Valley and it's located in Arizona, near the border with Utah. It's a place that should be experienced, not just looked at. Sit on one of those ferrous rocks and listen the sound of the wind through the valley. Breathe deeply. And remember that this isn't a tourist attraction but a sacred place for the Navajo people that inhabit these lands since centuries. For this reason, I suggest you to ask to one Navajo what this place means to them, perhaps while you're participating in a horseback tour. I guarantee you that their story will surprise you. Do not come here as tourists, come here as travelers looking for experiences and come here alone, or with a few dear people with you; stop at least one night to watch the stars, observe this wonder from dawn to dusk to get all the colors and don't just see it from above, but explore it with a Navajo company. And you will return here like I've done...

La prima immagine di cui voglio raccontarvi appartiene al 2010, foto che ho scattato durante il mio secondo viaggio negli Stati Uniti, quando ancora usavo una Nikon D3000, la mia prima reflex. 

La foto in sé non è perfetta ma questo luogo occupa un posto importante nel mio cuore, uno di quei luoghi in cui se potessi tornerei ogni anno per respirare silenzio, bellezza e spiritualità. Di solito ho la tendenza a non ritornare mai nello stesso posto (nel mondo ci sono così tante meraviglie da vedere!), ma questo è uno di quei rari casi in cui sono voluta ritornare. La prima volta è stata infatti nel 2008 (e lì le foto le avevo scattate rusticamente con una compatta e un glorioso Nokia... =) ).

Ovviamente quest'opera d'arte della natura non ha bisogno di presentazioni visto che è stata la protagonista di innumerevoli film, soprattutto western. Si tratta della mitica Monument Valley e si trova in Arizona, in prossimità del confine con lo Utah. E' un luogo che va vissuto, non semplicemente guardato. Sedetevi su una di quelle rocce ferrose e ascoltate il rumore del vento che si incanala nella valle. Respirate profondamente. E ricordate che questa non è un'attrazione turistica ma un luogo sacro per il popolo Navajo che abita queste terre da secoli. A questo proposito vi consiglio caldamente di chiedere ad un Navajo che cosa rappresenta per loro questo posto, magari mentre state partecipando ad un tour a cavallo. Vi garantisco che la loro storia vi sorprenderà. Non venite qua da turisti, venite qua da viaggiatori in cerca di esperienze e magari venite da soli, o con poche care persone al vostro fianco; fermatevi almeno una notte per guardare le stelle, osservate questa meraviglia dall'alba al tramonto cogliendo tutte le sfumature dei colori e non limitatevi a vederla dall'alto, ma esploratela in compagnia dei Navajo. E anche voi un giorno ritornerete come me...
